PANDOLFO (VIOLA DA GAMBA PLAYLIST)

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST HERE
During the COVID, I have made a point of catching up on all the films, books, and music that I had wanted to dive into over the years. Discovering the work of Paolo Pandolfo, an Italian viola da gamba player, had not been at the forefront of my mind, but it quickly became one of the lengthiest and most meaningful immersions of the summer.

What I’ve discovered is that I can easily survive off of this music alone.

This is a nostalgia playlist. I grew up watching Fred Astaire movies, and listening to the music of Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, and Anita O’Day. I threw together this compilation of jazzy oldies during quarantine as something to center and calm myself, and it does the trick. Perhaps because I’m a singer, most of these songs I chose feature a vocalist. Sprinkled in a few other non-jazz favorites like Mario Lanza’s “Be My Love” and Mac Miller’s “Blue World”.

Za-um – “beyond sense” – are the deconstructive linguistic experiments in sound symbolism and language (re)creation forged by futurists poet-persons: Velimir Khlebnikov and Aleksei Kruchenykh. The word and prefix “bez” finds itself across Eastern Europe, nearly always meaning “without”. za-um, bez-um is a tribute to making and undoing sense, to a nebulous historiography of avant-garde, a tradition of contesting traditions, of fusion, and of libido. The tracks in the YouTube playlist survey 50 years, from 1966 to 2016, dipping into landmark gatherings like Jazz on the Odra and Warsaw Autumn as well as sessions only possible in the recording studio.

My bandcamp track is a tribute and lamentation rooted in horror, the uncanny, the abject, and non-sense. All proceeds from the track will be donated to Rockaway Youth Task Force and Equality for Flatbush.

Bacanal Latino is a mosaic of popular music genres from across all Latin America and the Caribean. It carries a wide range of human emotions as they may customarily be expressed in song by Spanish speakers across the continent. Expect to hear tunes on universal motifs of Love (Definición Perfecta-Onda Moderna), Heartbreak (La Última Noche-Eydie Gorme), Patriotism (Latinoamérica-Calle 13), Fatherhood (Flor-Los Rivera Destino/Bad Bunny), Police brutality and racism (El Negro Bembón-Ismael Rivera), New York diaspora (Nueva York-Viento de Agua), and much more; all delivered in infectious rhythms. This is an invitation to sing and dance your heart out as would the average Latin American.
